What is the MASH unit?
HHPA gets animals in everyday that are injured, abused, sick and in conditions of bad health, malnutrition, and poor grooming. These animals are highly adoptable but need days or weeks of extra medical care and TLC to prepare them for adoption. In the past, they were euthanized. The MASH unit is a group of dedicated professional and lay people who have undertaken the humanitarian task to help these animals.
We have a long list of MASH Unit Alumni that have found great homes.
- Winston the horse who was 400 pounds underweight
- Phoenix the cat who came to us after being abused by neighborhood kids and lighter fluid
- PeeWee the chihuahua mix who came to the shelter with a broken femur
The list goes on and on with many others suffering from broken legs, lacerations or hair so matted your couldn’t find the pet in all the mess. Each of these pets have moved onto healthy, happy homes.
Each week or so, this page is updated with new arrivals in the MASH Unit. You can follow their stories, track their progress and spread the word about these wonderful pets in need.
August 3, 2010- Matted Maltese
This sweet baby was picked up by animal control after a concerned citizen found her collapsed in their front yard. Her hair was matted so bad that she could not see. We are betting that with all the mats, it probably hurt for her to walk. She was covered with thousands of fleas. On top of that, her teeth were in such bad shape the only option we had was to pull them. Here are her pictures from yesterday’s makeover.
