Lost and Found
Reclaiming Your Pet
Halfway Home Pet Adoptions is where Kansas City, Missouri’s Animal Health and Public Safety Division bring lost and stray animals. Halfway Home Pet Adoptions is not animal control and does not establish fines or regulations.
We encourage anyone missing a pet to physically check our shelter at least every other day. Too often, breeds are mislabeled or descriptions do not match the dog in its current condition.
Please note that all American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers or any dog displaying the physical traits of these breeds must be spayed or neutered before being released from our shelter.

Protecting your Reclaimed Pet
Thank you for reclaiming your pet from the shelter.
Halfway Home is a boarding facility for all animals that are picked up by Kansas City, Missouri’s animal control. In most cases, we have no knowledge of the pets in our shelter’s medical history or vaccination status. Some pets arrive to our shelter sick and have not been vaccinated. These pets could be flea/tick infested and can put your pet at risk while here.
We do everything in our power to keep the kennels clean at all times. However, many illnesses are airborne or spread by shelter guests touching infected pets and then touching healthy ones.
We highly recommend that you purchase antibiotics for your pet when it leaves the shelter either from our vet clinic or from your regular veterinarian! If your pet is not current on their yearly vaccinations, please consider getting this done to keep your pet safe.
What common conditions could my pet have been exposed to?
- Kennel Cough is the most common condition we see in the shelter. We have antibiotics you can purchase to help your pet recover. Signs of kennel cough include
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Snotty nose
- Lack of energy and appetite
- Sarcoptic and demodex mange is also common in the shelter. Both conditions result in hairloss.
- Parvovirus is a highly contagious, viral illness prevalent in shelters. Even with treatment, it can be fatal. The key is prevention and prompt treatment. Vaccinate your pet and watch for
- Excessive vomiting (often bloody)
- Excessive diarrhea (often bloody)
- Lack of appetite and lack of energy
- Fever
- Fleas and ticks
- Intestinal parasites are extremely common with symptoms of diarrhea and accidents in the house. You can purchase dewormer from our vet clinic or your regular veterinarian.
We know you care about your pet. Protect your pet by purchasing
- DA2PP Vaccination (Distemper, Parvo, Hepatitis, and Para Influenza) $10
- Strongid Dewormer $8
- Heartworm test $25
- Bordatella Vaccination (Kennel cough) $10

Lost a Pet?
If your pet is missing, don’t panic! Call your veterinarian and let them know. If your pet was wearing his rabies tag, this is a way that he can be tracked down.
Call the microchip company. They can send out a lost pet alert to area shelters, veterinarians and rescue groups. Make sure to verify your contact information with them. A microchip does no good if they can’t reach you.
