Help Save Lives
Volunteer
Volunteers are the lifeline of Halfway Home Pet Adoptions. Giving selflessly, volunteers walk dogs, socialize cats, represent Halfway Home at events around the community, teach children about pet care and more!
Volunteer Requirements
- Regular volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. For individuals under this age, we can arrange service days and have special programs.
- Volunteers must complete an application and orientation.
- Email Volunteer.HHPA@gmail.com for more information or to schedule your orientation.
Opportunities for Individuals
- Dog Socializing
- The time you spend with the pets at our shelter helps them find home faster. A dog that can walk well on a leash and knows basic commands will get adopted faster.
- Cat Cuddling
- Whether brushing them, playing with him or just providing a lap for a quick nap, the cats at Halfway Home hope you will volunteer in their area.
- Pet Grooming
- You should see the hair styles that some of the pets at our shelter are sporting! Boy do they need a makeover. Volunteer to groom and you can dramatically increase a pets chances of adoption.
- Matchmaking/Adoption Assistant
- Be directly involved in finding homes for pets in need as an adoption assistant. You will pair up families with pets that meet their needs and be rewarded by many happy endings.
- Pet Photography
- A picture is worth a thousand words! Volunteer time taking the photos of our pets that will go on sites where we promote pets for adoption.
- Fundraising
- Friends of Halfway Home is our non-profit partner in saving the lives of Kansas City’s homeless animals. You can help raise funds that go towards needed medical treatments of shelter pets, spay/neuter grants and more.
- Adoption and Awareness Events
- Represent Halfway Home around the metro area. From handing out coupons at large concerts to handling a pet at a T-Bones game, we need volunteers to help out at events. This is a fun way to make a huge difference at the shelter.
Opportunities for Groups and Organizations
- Does your company or club need a place for a service day? Halfway Home is a favorite with groups of all sizes. From the Marine Corps to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, groups regularly volunteer to help with special needs around the shelter. We can accommodate groups of most sizes and ages. Just contact the shelter for more information.
Foster Care through Halfway Home
The number of animals we save is directly related to how many foster homes we have to temporarily house the animals while we look for a suitable forever home for them. Fostering is one of the most important ways you can help homeless animals and when you foster for us, you are literally saving the life of a healthy, loving companion.
Types of Pets Needing Foster Homes
- Puppies or kittens too young and/ or immature to be adopted.
- Puppies and young dogs or kittens and young cats that require more socialization than available at the shelter.
- Older or senior dogs and cats that will be more comfortable in a home environment.
- Injured dogs and cats and/ or those recovering from surgery.
- Neglected or abused dogs and cats that need tender loving care.
- Dogs and cats suffering from “shelter stress” in need of a calming environment.
- Dogs and cats with special medical needs.
- Abandoned mothers with litter of puppies and/ or kittens.
Requirements For All Foster Parents
- Complete a Foster Parent Application, applications can be e-mailed or faxed to you
- Sign and promise to adhere to the Foster Parent Agreement
- ALL family pets in the potential foster home must be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and up to date on preventative medications
Once the application process has been approved, you will be contacted.
Required Licensing and City Regulations
Please be advised…
- We try very hard to show you the animals that APPEAR to be healthy and adoptable. However, you should know that in spite of our best efforts to keep down disease, it is impossible to guarantee that every animal placed will have a clean bill of health.
- If you have any questions or concerns about your foster pet, please contact HHPA Foster Coordinator to schedule an appointment with the shelter veterinarian.
- Animals that are known to have bitten or exhibited aggressive/ vicious tendencies will not be available for foster care.
If you are interested in learning more about foster opportunities in the future, please email us at Foster.HHPA@gmail.com.
Donate
Donations for the pets at Halfway Home can be sent to Friends of Halfway Home, our nonprofit partner. Gifts made in this manner are tax deductible. Friends of Halfway Home is a nonprofit, 501c3 organization with the purpose of improving the lives of pets at the shelter and the Kansas City metro. This is accomplished by assisting low income individuals with veterinary care, educating the community about pet related issues, providing medical treatment to shelter pets, spreading awareness about the shelter and more. Your donation supports the efforts of Friends of Halfway Home and directly improves the lives of Kansas City pets.
Designate the specific area you’d like to see your dollars put to work or make a donation to the general fund. Regardless, when you donate to friends, only 0.04% goes to cover administrative expenses. Friends sets aside 10% of your donation for the future building fund and the rest goes straight to helping pets in need.
