2018 is proving to be quite the year for EDM artists the Chainsmokers. The dynamic DJ duet of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart started the year strong with a string of single releases. The singles ranged from the dark-themed “Sick Boy”, to their lighter fare “Side Effects”. All of them have been very well-received. In addition to their song producing success the group has also had some blasts from the past. Their first studio album, which is also their only studio album, “Memeories… Do Not Open” nabbed the slot for third longest running non-consecutive No.1 for Billboard. This garnered the group high praise as their original sound has been proven to carry weight. Well apparently their evolved sound is good too because another blast form the past has just reared its head. Earlier this week the duo announced via Instagram that their 2016 hit single “Closer” was certified silver. This is a huge development from the group that it only four years young in the mainstream world.
The duo graced Instagram with some photos showing both Pall and Taggart holding some large plaques up. The giant plaques encase the cover art, records, and full certifications for diamond status. They also have certified diamond in big letters at the bottom. Halsey, the up and coming artist who collaborated with the duo, received one of her own. “Closer” was actually Halsey’s first hit single and served as her breakout song. Since then she has established herself in her own right. Both Pall and Taggart were very grateful for the honor and grateful to their fans. With so much going on one must wonder what is next for the New York-based artists.
“Memeories… Do Not Open” remains the duet’s solo album. They have hinted at a second and many believed the smattering of singles indicated one to come. Although they certainly do not need one as they are doing fine without, the success of their last album begs the question of will they. Right now the time is indeed ripe for number two, their star is more on the rise than ever. At present though they probably will just bask in success awhile.

The Chainsmokers began conquering the charts just over two years ago. The group is comprised of the musicians Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. The pair recently played on January 30th of 2018 in New York at the Conrad. It was towards the beginning of 2015 when the Chainsmokers first cracked the top ten with Roses. This led to an unstoppable period that lasted for years. They scored with numerous songs including Paris, Don’t Let Me Down, Closer and Something Just Like This. Closer was in the number one slot for twelve straight weeks.
Their success was daunting and there was a lot of pressure for more Top 40 pop and EDM tunes. Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart chose a different path and entered a darker territory. Most of their fans came along although their most ardent supports had already entered this new territory. Sick boy was launched as a single and is a good representation of the new direction of the superstars. At the time Sick Boy was released the Chainsmokers had not launched anything for nine months. In the past they released a new song almost every month because they want to remain current.
Sick Boy started a new chapter for Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. They have experienced a lot of growth both as people and artists. The lyrics of their music is a reflection of their generation and explains how they feel in relation to the rest of their generation. Their music is also about romance, the darker side of society and what is happening in the world and their lives. The duo admits they were a little angry and frustrated when they began creating Sick Boy. They felt like their lives has become a caricature and people only saw them for the things that were written or said about them. They realized they had to let go of this concept to move forward with their music.
They now consider the way they are relating to the world through their projections and social media. Part of their image is a story but the rest is left to interpretation. This was not arranged because it simply happened.
Alex Pall is creating an identity for electronic music.
The Chainsmokers has been dropping hit songs for a long time now. They produced singles that were radio bangers-“Roses” and “Don’t let me down”-were among the hit songs. They then released the long-awaited track “Closer” that featured Halsey. The one unique thing about this track is that both Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall are both featured singing. These two are DJs, and it makes them stand out as they are not just producing beats but adding their faces, hearts, and emotions to the beats they produce.
The Chainsmokers have that core ambition to be recognized as artists who indeed have thoughts and feelings. Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart are positive that they will add more flavor to this genre of electronic music through creating intimacy and emotion and a connection with their fans. They are actually establishing a new identity in this genre. Alex Pall had a career and was working in NewYork doing DJing as a hobby. He was really passionate because while he was growing up Alex Pall was a DJ. He then realized that his hobby was consuming much of his life and he wanted to major on it. Through his current manager who was working with him at the time,Pall was introduced to Drew. They both started working together and Pall had to quit his job while Drew moved from Maine to join him.
The duo kicked it off quite well with both knowing what they were bringing on the table. They talked about what they liked in music and also what they loved as they grew up. They were both ambitious and had their hearts set on their goals. They observed the industry knowing what was new, what worked and who was making it just to build their identity around that. Drew was talented in producing music and Pall was a DJ who did a lot of gigs and had the social marketing. They worked more and more together getting together and building their identities as artists. Owing to the fact that they were new in the industry, they had a lot of ground to cover.
They pushed everyday a little more with the aim of becoming better artists. It was a job like any other and Pall and Drew had to work extra hard to pay the bills. In addition, people related to their music at a much deeper level and that’s why Pall and Drew challenge themselves everyday and try to come up with new and interesting ways of doing things. Alex and Drew mostly write songs and sing about their lives. Even though most of their songs have been written for them, they have always been down on the ground with the songwriters making sure the songs are about them. The duo are to produce an album and Pall wants to give the fans what they want. Pall feels the concept of the songs in the album should be related to each other.
Through social media, the music for Chainsmokers is becoming more and more international. Their music is transcending age from small children to the old who can’t get enough of the Chainsmokers. Everyone and anyone can sing along to their tune, and this is evidence that they connect on a deeper level with their audience. The Chainsmokers have had two world tours and have always had new and exciting shows. Their audience and fan base has been expanding and the Chainsmokers have to spice up things. Mixing videos for their live shows and their performance element of their shows are getting bigger and better.
