Dog Adoption Application

Cat Adoption Application

When you adopt from Halfway Home you save the life of your new pet and improve the chances for others.

Check out some of our available Dogs and Cats here. If you don’t see what you are looking for, don’t give up. Not all our pets are posted online. We have as many as 50 pets arriving at our shelter each day. Visit our shelter to view lost pets that will be placed for adoption in 5 to 10 days, provided they are good candidates for adoption.

When visiting our shelter, ask our staff or volunteers to help you find the perfect match for your lifestyle. Spend some time with a potential new companion to get to know him or her better. We invite you to take a few dogs for a walk or to spend time with a favorite in one of our consultation rooms.

When a decision is reached our staff or volunteer will retrieve the kennel card and proceed to the reception area to fill out the application. There may be a short consultation session.

In most cases, your new pet can go home the following day. Pets that were already spayed or neutered when arriving at the shelter may be able to go home the same day.

How much will it cost?

Adoption Fees

Our standard adoption fee for dogs is $100. All dogs are spayed or neutered. They receive age appropriate vaccinations like bordatella, distemper-parvo, rabies and a fecal test. We test all dogs over 6 months of age for heartworms.

Our standard adoption fee for cats is $65. All cats are spayed or neutered. They receive age appropriate vaccinations like FVRCP and rabies.

In love already? Want a guarantee that you will get the pet you want? Our Early-Bird Adoption program ensures you first chance to adopt the pet of your dreams. The early bird adoption fee is $150 for any pet at the shelter the day prior to their release date. It includes all procedures listed above.

Microchip your new pet

Protect your pet! Halfway Home Pet Adoptions offers microchip implant for an additional fee of $20. We currently use the HomeAgain microchip system which according to their site costs around $45 at most vets. That is a savings of $25!

With your HomeAgain microchip, you get your first year’s membership in the HomeAgain Lost Pet Recovery Program. Among other benefits, HomeAgain provides lost pet health insurance coverage through PetFirst Healthcare. Your policy covers up to $3,000 (less $50 deductible) for medical treatment for injuries your dog or cat sustains while lost. Please note that coverage is not automatic-once enrolled in the HomeAgain service, you must call to activate your pet’s lost pet medical insurance coverage before he gets lost.

Your annual HomeAgain membership also includes free, anytime telephone assistance provided by licensed ASPCA veterinarians—a $60 value per call.

Most cities in the Kansas City metro require you to license your pets. Halfway Home Pet Adoptions licenses pets for Kansas City, Missouri residents for $12.

Adoption Process at HHPA

Meeting out Pets

At Halfway Home Pet Adoptions, we work hard to make the best matches possible- for our pets and their people. Please plan to spend at least half an hour with each pet you are interested to learn more about their personalities. We suggest bringing the whole family, especially if you have children, so we can see how the pet does with everyone.

Application

After spending time with the pet, you can fill out an adoption application. An adoption counselor will speak with you about the pet and your application. We may refer you to a different pet depending on your needs. Our goal is to maximize the chance for a long term placement by assuring a good match between pet and you, the potential owner.

If you rent, please plan ahead. We need to speak with a landlord or see your lease to verify pet policies before we can approve your application.

Once you’re Approved

Once you’re approved, your new pet will visit our vet clinic where he or she will be evaluated by a vet or vet assistant. If they pet is not already spayed or neutered, we will schedule it for surgery first thing the next morning. If they’re already spayed or neutered, they may be able to go home the same day with you.

Checking Out

Once your new pet is vetted, you will meet with a vet or vet assistant to review your pet’s medical history. You can purchase preventative medication for your new family member at a huge discount, schedule a follow up appointment and more with them

After meeting with the vet, you will check out and pay at the front office. Then you are on your way!

What if it doesn’t work out?

We do our best to place pets in homes where they will fit in with the family and lifestyle. Occasionally, a pet simply does not work well in a particular family situation. We understand. You have two weeks from adoption to use as a trial period. If you find that the pet you chose is not fitting in, you can schedule an appointment to return the pet. Half (50%) of the adoption fee will be refunded by check within 4 to 6 weeks. Please note, the refund applies only to the adoption fee.

I live out of state. Can I still adopt?

We welcome adopters from all over the country. Like any long distance relationship, it is a little harder to do. Transport of the pet from our shelter to your home is up to you to arrange. If the pet does not work out, there is no option to return the pet from out of state. Please call the shelter for more information.

What if my new pet gets sick?

Due to the incubation period of most common illnesses, we suggest that you keep your new pet away from and other pets for the first week or two. Please do not take your new pet to any public place for at least two weeks.

If your new pet is currently ill or injured and under treatment, you will receive a summary of the treatment your dog or cat has received during its stay in our shelter. We will also suggest a follow up treatment plan.

Please remember that any diagnostics, hospitalizations, injections or additional vaccinations must be at your expense.

Your adopted dog or cat may have behavioral or medical problems that may or may not have been evident during its stay with us. These problems may make it unsuitable for human companionship. If you elect to keep the animal, any treatment or training to correct the animal’s behavioral problems is your responsibility.

Host an Adoption Event

Have the shelter come to you! This is a wonderful opportunity for “pet friendly” apartment complexes, businesses and events. Representatives of Halfway Home Pet Adoptions will bring adoptable pets to your location. Pets can either go home with new families that day or be picked up at the shelter the next day.

We travel all over the Kansas City metro. Most events must be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance. Call or email us at adoptions.hhpa@gmail.com  to schedule your event. Book us early to ensure availability.  Requests made with less than 2 weeks notice can usually not be accommodated.
