Our History:
In the midst of an economic downturn, the city of Kansas City, Missouri made the decision to privatize the municipal shelter. After a bidding process, the city selected Veterinary Management Corporation as the company to operate the shelter.
On March 1, 2009, Veterinary Management Corporations opened the doors to the shelter under the name Halfway Home Pet Adoptions. Months were spent updating and renovating the shelter facility, providing a much needed facelift to the decades old building. As Halfway Home grew as an organization, the outcome and welfare of Kansas City’s homeless pets improved.
As 2009 drew to a close, Halfway Home found a euthanasia rate dramatically decreased from before the group assumed management of the shelter. Moving into 2010, we continue to make progress for pets in need. Each month, we take in an average of 650 to 700 animals.
Halfway Home Pet Adoptions offers a wide range of programs and services including the sheltering of lost and homeless animals, pet adoption and placement, spay/neuter programs, low cost vaccinations, volunteer opportunities and much more.
Because we operate as Kansas City’s animal shelter, we do not decline any animal intake from KCMO residents. Half Way Home Pet Adoptions does everything possible to find loving homes for the countless dogs and cats brought into the shelter every day. Sadly, the incoming rate of unwanted pets is much higher than the amount of available homes.
Halfway Home Pet Adoptions collaborates with several rescue groups in the region to get animals transferred. If you are a “licensed” rescue group and would like to offer assistance, please contact us: email@petshalfwayhome.com. (816) 921-0201.
The Halfway Home Pet Adoptions facility is open for adoptions 7 days a week.
Strays and lost dogs are kept at the shelter for five days before they are offered for adoption or euthanized. Pets relinquished by their owners are put up for adoption or euthanized the next day.
