Tempus Has Partnered with the Mayo Clinic

Tempus, a startup company created by Eric Lefkofsky to lead the charge in the fight against cancer, has partnered with the Mayo Clinic’s Center for Individualized Medicine according to the Chicago Tribune. Lefkofsky, the co-founder of Groupon, formed the company in Chicago, Illinois in 2015. Tempus has also partnered with other health care organizations such as Northwestern University’s Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and Rush University Medical Center. Lefkofsky stated that he is open to partnering with many more organizations in the future.

The main focus and mission of Tempus’ partnership with the Mayo Clinic is to use patient data, first and foremost, to treat and improve the survival rates of people suffering from cancer. Tempus will sequence the DNA of 1000 patients participating in research associating cancers such as lung cancer, breast cancer, lymphoma, and bladder cancer with immunotherapy and endocrine therapy. The goal is to be able to guide doctors in creating customized treatment plans in the future that are safe and effective for their patients.

Tempus will take this data, which includes the DNA sequence of the patient’s DNA and a biochemical analysis of the tumor itself and build a comprehensive library that will be able to be accessed by any physician, at anytime. Lefkofsky believes that data gathered at the molecular level, when combined into a library with the molecular data from other patients, is a powerful tool. He states that the genetic sequences stored within the library yields patterns within the DNA sequences that may indicate the presence of a mutation or change within a gene. Doctors can look to see which treatments were effective in patients with a similar mutation. The library will help guide the medical decisions that need to be made and give doctors the confidence that they are making the right decisions on behalf of their patients.
